Babette Semmer February 2023
Babette Semmer's practice is informed by the traditions of portraiture, genre painting, caricature and comics. She combines (auto-)biographical, popular and archetypal imagery with tropes and clichés from the history of art.
At PLAN B. Babette continued her ongoing research into tropes and fictions surrounding the female subject, specifically depictions of anonymous female figures in landscapes or interiors.
Tourist photographs, impressionist sea scapes and Renoir's nudes were only some of the cliches she had in mind when working on these new paintings and drawings.
Babette studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and at the Städelschule in the class of Amy Sillman and Monika Baer in Frankfurt. Her work has been exhibited at Kunstverein Bonn and Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, at Setareh in Berlin and at Gao Gallery in London amongst other venues.
Babette lives and works in Berlin. LINK
