Babette Semmer February 2023
Babette Semmer's practice is informed by the traditions of portraiture, genre painting, caricature and comics. She combines (auto-)biographical, popular and archetypal imagery with tropes and clichés from the history of art.
During her artist residency at Plan B. Babette will be executing a painted mural in a disused building in the village of Perachora. For a while now she has been interested in socialist public art, the critical potential of comics and the tradition of the Tronie (a flemish genre of character-studies). These influences will form the bases of a work, which will engage with local fictions and stories.
Babette studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and at the Städelschule in the class of Amy Sillman and Monika Baer in Frankfurt. Her work has been exhibited at Kunstverein Bonn and Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, at Setareh in Berlin and at Gao Gallery in London amongst other venues.
Babette lives and works in Berlin.
